How do I use DesignMerge to produce variable data output?

There are four basic steps in using DesignMerge to produce variable data output. Once you have installed DesignMerge and have a database file (a plain delimited text file that contains the variable data for the job), then do the following:

STEP 1) Set up a DDF (Database Definition) for this job.

The DDF describes the database to DesignMerge, creating Variable Links that you will assign to content in the document to make that content variable.

STEP 2) Assign Variable Links to content in the document.

Lay out the document as you normally would for one recipient. Then, use the DesignMerge floating palette to assign Variable Links to the content that you wish to make variable. DesignMerge allows you to vary any of the content in the document.

STEP 3) Run tests and reports to check your job before producing output.

DesignMerge provides many different types of tests and reports to confirm your settings will produce the type of variable data output you desire.

STEP 4) Produce your variable data output.

You can use DesignMerge to produce a document, or you can use a DesignMerge Print Driver to produce variable data print output.

NOTE: For more information, these four basic steps are covered in detail with screenshots and sample files in Tutorial #1 (The Basics) in the DesignMerge Tutorial Manual, which is available in PDF format in the DesignMerge product folder on your system. Additionally, you will find other tutorials and manuals which describe additional options as well as details regarding the different types of variable data print output that DesignMerge can produce.
