How do I set up a Link to not print if it is empty?

By default, Variable Links in a new DDF are not set to delete if they are empty (unless you changed your DesignMerge installation's default settings for new Variable Links).

However, you can change a Variable Link's settings whenever you wish.

To set up a Variable Link to be deleted if empty (so it will not print when a record does not have any data for it), do the following:

  1. Open the Variable Links window.
  2. In the list of Links on the left side of the Variable Links window, select the Link that will sometimes be empty. This will display that Link's settings on the right side of the window.
  3. In the If Link is Empty box on the right side of the Variable Links window, select Delete
  4. If you would also like the line this Link is on to be deleted whenever the line is empty after the Link is deleted, check the Remove Empty Lines checkbox option.
  5. Click OK to save these new settings and close the Variable Links window.
  6. These new settings will be applied the next time DesignMerge merges variable data into this Link.
For more information, including an example of setting up a Link to be deleted if empty, see Tutorial #1a (The Basics) in the DesignMerge Tutorial Manual, available in PDF format in the DesignMerge product folder on your system.

TIP: To change your DesignMerge installation's default setings for new Variable Links, do the following:
  1. Open the Variable Links window.
  2. In the list of Links on the left side of the Variable Links window, select a Link whose settings you would like to use as the defaults for new Variable Links.
  3. Click the Make Default button on the bottom right corner of the Variable Links window.

  4. From this point onward, these settings will be automatically assigned to any new Variable Links that you add to any DDF, including the new Variable Links that are set up when you use Quick Setup.
