Sizing a Meadows 2D Bar Code

Solution

Each of the Meadows 2D Bar Code formats provide a "Sizing" option, which allows you to select how the 2D Bar Code will be sized within a text frame.

This article describes each of the available "Sizing" selections, and also provides instructions to create a 2D Bar Code of a specific size.

SIZING

  • Auto (the default setting): Sizes the bar code in single point increments to fit proportionately within the text frame.

  • Standard: Sizes the bar code to the standard point size of 8 point, which may cause an overset condition if that point size produces a bar code that is larger than the text frame. Therefore, if the 2D Bar Code is a Variable Bar Code, you may prefer to run a Longest Line Test before producing merged output.

  • Current*: Applies the point size that is currently applied to the 2D Bar Code that is already in the frame (see NOTE below), which may cause an overset condition if that point size produces a bar code that is larger than the text frame. Therefore, if the 2D Bar Code is a Variable Bar Code, you may prefer to run a Longest Line Test before producing merged output.

  • Shrink to Fit*: Applies the point size that is currently applied to the 2D Bar Code that is already in the frame (see NOTE below), and then, if the resulting code is oversetting the frame, adjusts the point size downward in 1 point amounts until the code fits within the frame.

NOTE: When applying the Current or Shrink to Fit setting, if a 2D Bar Code has not already been placed in the text frame, then the code will be originally sized to 12 points. In that case, once the 2D Bar Code has been placed in the frame, simply select all of the text that is in this frame, and apply the point size that you prefer and also remember to apply a matching Leading amount. For example, if you apply a 6 point size, then also set the leading amount to 6 point.

TO CREATE A 2D BAR CODE OF A SPECIFIC SIZE

  1. Create a 2D Bar Code using representative data, selecting "Shrink to Fit" for the Sizing option, and any other selection that you prefer for the other options.

  2. Select all of the text that is in this frame, and apply the point size that you prefer and also remember to apply a matching Leading amount.

  3. If the 2D Bar Code is a Variable Bar Code, you may prefer to run a Longest Line Test and a Shortest Line Test to verify the bar code will retain a desired overall size when merged with the longest and shortest data. Also, remember to use Edit>Undo (or File>Revert) after each of these tests to ensure the 2D Bar Code is returned to its original size before you run a new merge session on this document.
